Nike Pegasus Series: How the Pegasus Premium Fits into the Lineup
We now have three shoes in the Nike Pegasus road range. The original Pegasus 41 is one of the most famous running shoes out there, a classic daily trainer and the icon of the responsive range.
The Pegasus Plus is a faster and lighter upgrade that uses pinnacle ZoomX foam to power new PB’s. If you want to complicate things even further, they are designed to look, and act exactly like the beloved Pegasus Turbo but that name didn’t fit into the new structure of road shoes.
The Pegasus Premium ups the cushioning, technology and bounce for a truly unique experience and a luxurious ride. Don’t get it confused with the similarly named Pegasus 41 Premium. The inclusion of the number means it’s the classic Pegasus, simply with an updated upper design for extra bling on the streets.
Nike Pegasus Premium Design: A Closer Look
Starting with looks, its reminiscent of Air Max lifestyle trainers, meaning it looks great on the streets despite the larger-than-life stack height. The circle knit upper features tons of comfort features and overlays, but it’s the full-length Air Zoom unit that draws the eye.
Not the simple Air bubbles of the past, Air Zoom units are composed of pressurised air, and tightly stretched fibres. Designed to absorb impact, then snap back into shape quickly, they give a fast, bouncy feel underfoot, while simultaneously reducing stress on muscles, joints, and tendons. It also acts as a firming agent, providing a touch of extra stability to this high stack of foam.
Above the Zoom Air unit, you get Nike’s pinnacle ZoomX foam. Used in both the Vaporfly and Alphafly, this is record breaking, race winning technology, giving a lightweight but responsive feel that sits directly below your foot.
A smaller layer of ReactX foam underneath the Zoom Air Unit adds some slightly firmer foam for stability, and extra durability, as well as a call back to the original Pegasus.
Underneath these three layers of midsole, the outsole features almost full coverage of rubber. Unusual these days because of the extra weight all that rubber adds to the shoe (it’s the heaviest component in a shoe) it also adds extra durability, so expect to enjoy the ride for a long time to come.
Final Verdict: Should You Buy the Nike Pegasus Premium?
A question being asked a lot, is the Nike Pegasus Premium a lifestyle shoe? The answer, definitely not, this is an excellent and fun running shoe, but it looks great too, so would I wear it socially as well? Definitely.
It is a heavy shoe, but from all reports that weight seems to disappear on the foot. The incredible levels of fun, bounce, and energy within the shoe mean you don’t notice the weight when you’re running.
It is also a narrow shoe, especially through the midfoot. This won’t affect the fit, which is standard to Nike shoes, but lacking the flared midfoot that some max stack shoes are built with, stability might be an issue for those who prefer, or need a little help in this area.
With a lot of the big questions out of the way, there is only one that really matters, is it any good? Well, reviewers are absolutely loving it, not just for the fun, unique ride, but for its versatility. Despite the max stack you can use it for a multitude of sessions, from Supershoe training to long distance, slower runs.
The most comparable shoes in the Pro:Direct line up would be the HOKA SkywardX or the Cloudmonster Hyper, both of which are also massive stack, fun, extreme shoes.
We would recommend giving the new Pinnacle Pegasus a try, it gives premium comfort, performance and a lively, enjoyable ride not to be missed.
