Sabastian Sawe Goes Sub-2 in London: A Kenyan Masterclass in Holding Pace
Records tumble on a warm spring day in London as the world's largest annual charity event showcases the world's best distance runners.
On an extraordinary day in London 2 men went under 2 hours for a full marathon, the first time anyone had done so in a competition, Tigst Assefa smashed her own world record and Jacob Kiplimo went faster than any man had previously run in a competition marathon only to end up third, and as if all of that wasn't crazy enough, the new world record holder was only running in his fourth marathon, and second place went to a debut!
While the 2-hour barrier has previously been broken by the legendary Eluid Kipchoge, it was in very favourable circumstances, not in competition, and as such wasn't counted in the official record books. But last Sunday Sabastian Sawe of Kenya beat the late Kelvin Kiptum's world record (2:00:35) and Eluid Kipchoge's unofficial record (1:59:40) by smashing expectations with a phenomenal 1:59:30. In second place, also under 2 hours was Yomif Kejelcha in 1:59:41, not bad for his first competitive marathon race.
To give some context to some of the stats seen above, the Kenyan's second half of his race was completed in 59:01 which is, incredibly, faster than Sir Mo Farah's British Half Marathon record of 59:32. Awe inspiring stuff.
It was an especially good day for adidas since both first and second place men and Tigst Assefa were wearing their new, currently unreleased Adizero Pro Evo 3 shoe, available here at Pro:Direct soon.
If you can't wait to get your hands on this record-breaking technology, we currently have stock of its (also record breaking) predecessor available, as well as the more friendly, stable and less experimental marathon super shoe the adidas adizero adios Pro 4 which shares some of the same technology and design ideas in a shoe more suited to many non-elite runners.
