Unlike football-derived speed boots, Canterbury Speed is built specifically for rugby. The shape stays light and responsive without going as narrow or stripped-back as some football speed silos. That makes it a useful option for backs who want a quick boot but still want a little padding and rugby-specific structure around the foot.

Who Suits Canterbury Speed?
Wings and full-backs are the easy answer, but Speed has a wider backline use than the name suggests.
Scrum-halves get a lightweight boot for sharp movements around the breakdown, while fly-halves and centres can benefit from the cleaner contact area created by the asymmetric lacing used on current versions. Outside backs get the responsive feel without having to squeeze into a very low-volume football boot.
The fit is standard to slightly slim, with the heel and toe held securely. It should feel more forgiving than something like a Nike Mercurial, while still keeping the foot contained when accelerating and changing direction.
If you need significantly more forefoot room or support through contact, Canterbury Phoenix is the better comparison.
Canterbury Speed SG or FG?
Most of the current Canterbury Speed rugby boots on this page are soft ground.
Speed SG boots suit wet natural grass where you still want a lighter backs boot but need metal studs to find purchase underneath. That is useful for kick chase, defensive turns and stepping at pace when a winter pitch starts getting loose.
Firm ground Speed boots belong on firmer natural grass. Through summer and pre-season, an FG version makes more sense when the pitch is too hard for longer SG studs to sink into properly.
A dry natural pitch is still different from artificial grass. If your regular training is on 3G, choose footwear with a soleplate intended for artificial surfaces rather than treating FG as the same thing. Surface comes before the model name.
Speed Falcon, Speed Infinite or Phoenix?
Speed Falcon and Speed Infinite both sit in Canterbury's backs-focused Speed family. Across the collection, Elite, Pro and Team versions give you different routes through the range depending on budget and how much boot you want.
Phoenix is a different proposition. It has a broader forefoot and more support for players moving between contact and open play, making it better suited to back-rowers, mobile forwards and physical centres.
Stampede goes further again towards forward power and scrum stability.
