Nike Air Max 90, 95, Moto 2K, Muse & Dn8

You can usually recognise a Nike Air Max by its sole. The Air Max 90 has its familiar heel window, the 95 carries visible cushioning into the forefoot, and the newer Air Max Muse exaggerates the arch beneath the shoe. Each generation has brought something different to Nike's running archive, from the layered designs of the 1990s to the technical shapes of the 2000s and beyond. Today's women's Nike Air Max trainers bring those designs together, with plenty of differences in construction, cushioning and fit.

Nike Air Max 90 and 95: The Original Classics

The Air Max 90 has stayed remarkably close to its original 1990 design. Stitched overlays, moulded TPU details and the rubber Waffle outsole give it a recognisable shape, with visible Max Air cushioning in the heel. Depending on the edition, uppers combine leather, suede, textiles and synthetic materials. It's a fairly structured trainer, with a padded collar and a more compact profile than some of Nike's later Air Max releases.

The Nike Air Max 95 takes a different approach. Sergio Lozano's original design drew inspiration from human anatomy, with layered side panels running along the upper and visible Air cushioning beneath both the heel and forefoot. The distinctive gradient colourways remain closely associated with the model, while Air Max 95 Big Bubble editions revisit the original cushioning design with more prominent Air units.

If you're comparing the two, look at the shape around the forefoot, the upper construction and how the cushioning is arranged. Both have plenty of history behind them, although their proportions are noticeably different.

Air Max Moto 2K, Muse and Dn8

Nike's 2000s running archive has brought another generation of Air Max trainers into focus. The Nike Air Max Moto 2K combines curved synthetic overlays, textile panels and metallic detailing with a foam midsole and visible Max Air cushioning. Silver and grey editions bring out the technical appearance, particularly alongside the reflective accents found on selected releases.

The Air Max Muse heads in a different direction. Created with exaggerated proportions and an unusually high arch, it places the cushioning within a sculpted sole that's quite unlike the traditional Air Max 90. Its upper combines synthetic leather with strategically placed mesh, while the raised profile gives the shoe one of the most distinctive shapes in the current Air Max family.

The Nike Air Max Dn8 brings newer cushioning technology into the collection. Its Dynamic Air system uses eight pressurised tubes arranged beneath the foot, with different pressure levels designed to respond as you move. The sculpted upper and full-length cushioning layout separate it from the classic heel Air construction, offering another take on Nike's technical footwear designs.

Women's Nike Air Max Colours, Sizing and Fit

Black and white Nike Air Max trainers remain familiar choices across the collection, but colour can make a real difference to how each design comes across. Metallic silver brings out the panels of the Moto 2K, cream and neutral finishes work particularly well across the Air Max 90, while pink, burgundy and contrasting colourways give the Muse's sculpted shape a different finish.

Fit varies across the Air Max family. Some Air Max 90 and Moto 2K editions have specific Nike recommendations to size up, while other models use different upper constructions and fits. Check the individual product's sizing advice, particularly if you're moving between an Air Max 95, a mesh-based retro runner and a newer design such as the Muse.
