The game itself was Everton versus Manchester United, and in the dugout, Joe Royle versus Alex Ferguson. Royle’s Dogs of War were on a high after dispatching Spurs 4-1 in the semi-final, while United had edged out Crystal Palace via a replay.
The many thousands of Evertonians who had descended on London weren’t to be denied, and nor were the Toffees on the pitch, as Paul Rideout nodded home the rebound after Graham Stuart had hit the bar. One-nil to the Blues after 30 minutes, and that was enough to secure the win.
Captain Dave Watson lifted the trophy, and the players did laps of honour – Amo in a blue beret, Big Dunc wearing a blue nose, with scarves and rosettes everywhere. And at the centre of it all, an absolute classic football shirt.
