Spain struggled throughout their Euro 1984 qualifying campaign and left themselves needing an impossible 11-goal swing in their final group game against Malta. La Roja scored at minute 15, but Malta managed to draw level just nine minutes later, reducing Spain’s already slim chance of qualification. A few minutes later, Santillana scored twice to complete his hattrick, but hope seemed lost with the halftime scoreline reading 3-1, leaving Spain needing nine goals in just 45 minutes.

By the end of the game, Santillana had added another goal to his haul, Pol Rincon scored four, Antonio Maceda scored two, and Manu Sarabia and Juan Senor scored one each, giving Spain the 11-goal margin they needed to qualify.

Despite their last-ditch qualification, La Roja recorded one of their best-ever campaigns at Euro 1984. Draws with Romania and Portugal and a historic last-minute win over West Germany put them top of their group, and their triumph against Denmark over penalties saw them reach a major international final for just the second time in their history. Unfortunately, a France team led by Ballon d’Or winner Michel Platini were a step too far, but the tournament is one of the most memorable in Spain’s history.
