Long Sleeve Football Shirts Are Back, and Football Looks Better for It
I've always had a soft spot for long sleeve football shirts.
Maybe it started with Beckham. Maybe Henry in gloves. Maybe Ronaldo pulling his sleeves halfway over his hands before a free-kick. Fernando Torres flying around Anfield belongs in there too. Certain footballers are hard to picture without them because the sleeve became part of the player, as recognisable as the boots, the number or the way they wore the collar.
For years, proper long sleeves all but disappeared. The base layer took over, shirts got lighter and what had been a normal choice slowly became something you were more likely to find in a vintage shop than a modern changing room. From a distance, the base-layer look did the job. Up close, I've never been convinced. A short-sleeved shirt with something underneath is still a short-sleeved shirt.
Thankfully, football has found its sleeves again.
Why Long Sleeve Football Shirts Are Back
The comeback was already gathering pace last season. Arsenal, Liverpool and other adidas clubs brought the shape back onto Premier League pitches, with players choosing proper long sleeves again and supporters finally getting the same option in the shops. Nike followed too. By 2026/27, it no longer feels unusual when somebody walks out with their cuffs down.
The timing makes sense. Football has spent the last few years digging through its wardrobe. Trefoils are back. 90s and early-2000s shirts are everywhere. Old kits have moved from collections and cupboards into pubs, festivals and everyday wardrobes. Long sleeves belong in that picture, but I don't think nostalgia explains all of it. Some football shirts simply look better when the design gets the whole arm to work with.
Liverpool's 2026/27 away shirt is exactly that sort of shirt. White base, deep red details, Trefoil on the chest and Three Stripes travelling all the way from shoulder to cuff. The short-sleeved version works perfectly well. The long-sleeved one has the proportions I want from a football shirt. More stripe, proper cuffs, better silhouette. Simple.
The Sleeve Was Part of the Player
Football kits used to leave a little more room for personal habits. One player rolled his sleeves up, another pulled them over his wrists. Henry added gloves. Beckham generally kept his down. Ronaldo turned long sleeves into something close to a career-long uniform.
Those details sound tiny because they were. Football shirts are full of things like that, though. We remember collars, sponsors, number fonts, whether somebody tucked their shirt in and what boots they wore with it. Beckham against Greece looks right in long sleeves. Henry coming in from the left looks right in them. Ronaldo standing over a free-kick looks right in them.
And now the next generation has its own image. Ferran Torres scoring the winning goal in the 2026 World Cup final in long sleeves felt almost too perfect. After years spent talking about Beckham, Henry and Ronaldo whenever the subject came up, one of the biggest football moments of 2026 arrived with long sleeves.
Maybe that is overly sentimental for a bit of extra fabric. Fair enough. Football shirts have always made people sentimental about far less.
Long May They Stay
The comeback works away from the pitch too. Football shirts are being worn as clothing far beyond the old matchday replica uniform. Loose jeans, shorts, trainers, jackets, vintage shirts mixed with new ones. A long sleeve football shirt sits comfortably in that space because it has always felt slightly more complete as a piece of clothing.
Supporters can actually buy them again as well. For years, finding current long sleeve football shirts could be surprisingly difficult, even when certain players still had versions made for them. Now the choice is coming back, with authentic and replica long sleeve shirts appearing across more current kits.
I've spent enough years pretending the base-layer version was basically the same thing. It wasn't. Give me the proper cuff, the full sleeve graphic and the slightly unnecessary extra material every time.
