The Return of the Dragon: Real Madrid's Y-3 Shirt Remains a Modern Classic

More than a decade after Yohji Yamamoto brought his distinctive creative vision to the Bernabéu, adidas and Real Madrid revive one of the most recognisable football shirts of the modern era. And following the return of the legendary Beast Pack, 2026 is becoming a celebration of Y-3's extraordinary football design heritage.

Created by Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto as part of his first collaboration with the Spanish club, the Real Madrid 2014/15 third shirt was unconventional, unmistakable and unlike almost anything else being worn at the highest level of football. Now, twelve years after its original appearance, adidas and Real Madrid are bringing it back.

Set against a dark charcoal background, the front of the shirt featured elaborate artwork incorporating a two-headed dragon and a bird, with flowing illustrations extending across the body.

Drawing on Eastern symbolism, Yamamoto used the two-headed dragon to represent the prestige and power associated with Real Madrid. The bird represented agility, skill and the relentless pursuit of success.

Together, the creatures reflected the club's ambition and identity through a design language more commonly associated with Japanese art and high fashion than football apparel.

It was a bold departure from the conventional approach to football kit design. The original Dragon jersey has developed a reputation that extends well beyond its single season on the pitch. The shirt helped demonstrate how the worlds of football, fashion and design could coexist within an authentic performance product.

The original adidas 2014/15 third kit has become a highly desirable piece among football shirt collectors and fans of fashion alike. Where most third shirts explored alternative colours or subtle patterns, Yamamoto treated the entire jersey as a canvas.

For the latest in their reissue series, the Y-3 Dragon Bring Back Collection faithfully recreates the iconic 2014/15 adidas Real Madrid Third shirt, retaining the dark charcoal foundation and elaborate creature artwork that made the original so distinctive.

We get both short-sleeve and long-sleeve versions, accompanied by a matching track top and track pants inspired by the original Y-3 design.

It's an opportunity to revisit one of the most memorable collaborations in modern football apparel, without fundamentally changing what made the shirt significant in the first place.

The adidas x Real Madrid Y-3 Dragon Bring Back Collection is available from 5 November 2026 at Pro:Direct Soccer.

The Y-3 Legacy: From Madrid To The Beast Pack

The Dragon jersey established the foundations for a creative relationship that would return in subsequent years and exists beyond Real Madrid.

Twenty years after the original 2006 Beast Pack, adidas revisited the collection in October 2026, bringing the legendary Dragon and Tiger illustrations back onto modern performance football boots.

Limited to just 2,000 pairs of each design worldwide, the Beast collection connected the original artwork of Japanese artist Taishi Hayashi with two of adidas' most recognisable contemporary football franchises.

The collection also received an El Clásico showcase, bringing Y-3's creative history back to the pitch during one of football's biggest rivalries.

And if you're quick you can still catch a pair of the F50 Y-3 or Predator Y-3 Beast Pack at The World's Best Bootroom Pro:Direct Soccer.
