adidas Barricade Clay
The Barricade is back. Ushering in the next generation of tennis footwear, everyone’s favourite stability shoe returns in the form of the adidas Barricade 12. Built for the relentless sliding and grinding of today’s game, the new Barricade redefines support and durability to meet the demands of the modern player. It’s the ultimate expression of control, with a Torsion System 3D-engineered shank ensuring a smooth heel-to-toe transition during any kind of agile movement. At the laces, the eyestay is welded and reinforced to help prevent slippage, and on the medial side the upper wraps around the top of the foot for extra protection and durability. Durability across the board has gone up a level, with improved Adituff abrasion resistance guarding the toe and an outrageously resilient Adiwear 2.0 outsole providing long-lasting traction underfoot. Even the “adidas” letters on the side of the shoe are made from anti-abrasion material. For comfort, the Geofit system at the heel features anatomical sense pods to neatly accommodate the natural shape of the foot, filling in the gaps to give a perfect fit. The neoprene tongue is perforated to keep your feet fresh during extended sessions, while Bounce midsole cushioning absorbs impact forces and returns energy for quick bursts of acceleration.
Championed by company founder Adi Dassler’s son, Horst, the shoe’s sturdy construction was a significant departure from the traditional canvas plimsoles that the brand had produced in the past.
Plimsoles remained the footwear of choice for most players of the time, but that soon changed when adi recruited French pro Robert Haillet to wear their new creation, emblazoning his face on the tongue and sending him out to show the shoe’s potential to the world.
Sound familiar? That’s right, the Haillet became the legendary Stan Smith, with the American replacing the recently retired Frenchman in 1971.
Since then, it’s been a constant flow of innovation from adidas, and a never-ending stream of star endorsement. From signature shoes for Rod Laver and Billie Jean King to design partnerships with Stella McCartney and Pharrell Williams, adidas have always set the standard in both performance and style.
Their latest range includes the legendary Barricade with its unrivalled stability, along with the light and fast Ubersonic. Or, if you prefer more of an all-rounder, check out the CourtJam and CourtFlash ranges. Options are available for a variety of surfaces, of course, and you can take your pick from adi’s superb midsole cushioning, whether that’s Bounce, Boost, or Lightstrike.
