Back in 1971, in the pre-Nike days of Blue Ribbon Sports, running coach Bill Bowerman was dealing with a conundrum. He was looking for a sole design that would be responsive and perform evenly on newer track surfaces, and he would famously find his inspiration in the humble waffle iron. The distinctive grid pattern produced by the iron offered improved grip and shock absorption compared to the traditionally flat soles of the time and would go on to feature on Nike’s first ever running shoe, the Waffle Racer. It continues to offer reliable performance even now, with the Waffle One exploring the range’s heritage of innovation with new features, technologies, and slick modern styling. Every Waffle shoe honours this legacy, designed to provide the ever-appreciated traction performance that lies at the heart of the Nike brand.
