First released in 1987, the Nike Air Max premiered some specific innovations that would later pop up again and again. Designed by the up-and-coming Tinker Hatfield, who had only been with Nike since ’85, the original AM was looking to push boundaries with brand-new Max Air cushioning and an architecturally inspired design. On top of new, ultra-soft Air cushioning, the iconic visible Air midsole would draw the eye and show off the tech in style. A few questioning voices believed that Tinker had gone too far, but the result speaks for itself – incredible comfort and a legacy of layered designs that lives on.

Nike have been designing, creating and collaborating on sport and street legends since 1964 – everyone wants a piece of the Swoosh. Their signature logo and "Just Do It" tagline can be seen on clothes, sneakers, boots, and accessories the world over, from football stadiums and basketball arenas to street hangouts and music festivals. With influential technology like Nike Air and style icons such as the classic Swoosh Hoodie, they’ve been setting trends and making waves since forever.

Conceived at first as an option for the more powerful runner, the Air Max 95’s superior cushioning and premium, durable materials have made it a fan favourite ever since. Coming at a time when Nike’s offerings in the running-related category were falling behind their booming basketball range, they saw fit that newcomer designer Sergio Lozano be brought in to provide a fresh perspective.

Sergio found his inspiration outside his office window, as he often found himself staring at the landscape, imagining a design being eroded and unearthed from the ground. This simple premise expanded to nature and the human body, with layered elements visible on the upper that mirrored the body’s contours, spine, and ribs with its wavy lines. Uniquely distinct among the Air Max lineup, the 95 barely has a Swoosh, with only a tiny version of the famous logo positioned at the rear. It was also the first shoe to have Nike’s signature Air Max cushioning visible under the forefoot, adding to the premium feel and securing its streetwear relevance from the day it was released.
