United qualified for the Cup Winners’ Cup by claiming the 1989/90 FA Cup and began their campaign with dominant 3-0 and 5-0 aggregate victories over Hungarian Cup winners Pecsi Mecsek and Wrexham, respectively. Bruce’s aforementioned goalscoring exploits helped see the team through tougher tests against Montpellier and Legia Warsaw, and Mark Hughes wrote his name into the history books with two goals against his former club Barcelona in the final to win United’s first European title in 23 years.
