One of the most recognisable logos on the planet, Nike’s famous Swoosh can be seen on every type of sportswear, but did you know that they started in running?
Blue Ribbon Sports, as they were originally known, began as an importer, offering Onitsuka Tiger running shoes to American athletes in the 1960s. In 1972, they created the first Nike-branded shoe, and the rest, as they say, is history.
As seen on the feet of sports stars and enthusiastic amateurs alike, today Nike continue their mission to “bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world”. And remember: if you have a body, you’re an athlete.
While their spikes have won countless medals, they’re best known for their record-breaking speed range, including the pioneering Alphafly and the legendary Pegasus.
Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next Percent - White/Racer Blue-Cyber-Black
The evolution of the 4%, the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next Percent is always to looking to improve your run by the next percent. With a lighter design it is faster feeling than before, and it incorporates feedback from elite athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge and Shalane Flanagan to enhance its performance.
The incredibly lightweight and responsive ZoomX cushioning returns in the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next Percent as does the carbon fibre plate, but Nike have managed to cram 15% more foam, largely in the forefoot, to provide even more energy return late in the stride Despite this addition the overall weight of the shoe stays the same. Perhaps the biggest update is in the upper where Vaporweave is making its debut. Lighter than Flyknit it is breathable but crucially absorbs far less water from sweat or rain, so stays light and airy over the course of a full marathon. The laces have been slightly offset which alleviates pressure along the sensitive part of the foot, and a thin foam pad has been inserted into the heel to keep the Achilles happy. The outsole has also been updated with a mix of traction patterns being used to improve forefoot grip and increase the handling in the wet. Contoured treads with deep grooves on the outsole help to provide smoother movement during turns.

Carbon Plate
Carbon plates have well-researched benefits and a seemingly endless list of race wins and world records.
They create the firmer feel that fast racers are looking for and help to guide the foot through your stride, providing a touch of extra support. They can also help create a rocker feel, with the stiffness allowing the shoe to pivot – as the toe goes down, the heel must come up, easing you into your next stride.
Although stiff, they do flex, providing an energised pop of forward momentum as the plate fights to retain its shape.
Each brand, and almost every shoe, uses a plate differently. Different shapes, thicknesses, and designs are used to prioritise a different aspect of performance. Some aim exclusively to guide the stride, while others focus solely on propulsion.
