Heading into 1990, the Jordan franchise juggernaut would produce another smash hit with the Air Jordan 5, a luxury basketball sneaker created by returning designer Tinker Hatfield. The shoe’s bold, in-your-face look was inspired by the Supermarine Spitfire, a British WW2 aircraft, based on how Tinker saw Michael perform “like a fighter plane” on the court.
Sharktooth-style details on the midsole evoke the aggressive decorated fuselages of the Spitfire, but that wasn’t the only innovation. A reflective tongue caught both the eye and the flashbulb camera, while closer to the foot a lace lock and ergonomic asymmetric collar brought secure support, helping deliver Michael’s career-high 69-point game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
