Not many modern shoes can boast over a century of history, but the Chuck Taylor All Star, formerly the “Non-Skid”, is one of the few. The Converse Rubber Shoe Company’s first foray into the basketball world, the original “Non-Skid” or “All Star” shoe released in 1917, leveraging their rubber expertise for a fantastically grippy outsole that was perfect for the court. It was popular and effective, but what of the name Chuck Taylor? A few years later, in 1922, Converse hired young semi-pro Charles H. “Chuck” Taylor as a coach and salesman. Chuck would quickly become the face of the brand, famously accelerating the rise of the sport nationwide and embedding the All Star in the consciousness of every budding b-baller.
