On his way to becoming the best tennis player in the world in the early 1920s, French prodigy Rene Lacoste gained the nickname the Alligator, a nod to a bet he’d made with his coach over a crocodile suitcase ahead of a David Cup match. A few years later, now the world No.1, Lacoste asked his friend and stylist Robert George to sew a small crocodile onto the jackets he wore to arrive on court, and the legendary Lacoste logo was born.
In 1930, a keen linksman himself, Rene married golf champion Simone Thion de la Chaume, tying the brand to the greens and fairways forever. Their daughter, Catherine, inherited her parents’ love of the game and no little of their sporting talent – she won the US Open in 1967, aged just 22. Together, they built Lacoste into one of the world’s most popular manufacturers of golfing apparel and equipment.
