Newbery AXE Player Cricket Bat

Slice and dice your way through the field with the Newbery AXE Player Cricket Bat – Blue/Red, featuring a revolutionary new handle shape based on the traditional haft of nothing less than an actual, real-life axe.

We’ve all heard of bats being referred to as “blades” and “weapons”, but if there’s a piece of willow that truly deserves to be spoken of in such terms, it’s the Newbery AXE. Taking inspiration from the “haft” of a traditional axe – the part you use to hold the weapon – Newbery’s innovative new design features a thicker bottom hand section, with the handle then tapering in like a corset for the top hand. The effect is remarkable, allowing far more precise movements with the guiding top hand, such that you can control your shots with unprecedented accuracy. Why didn’t someone think of this sooner?Looking at the bat in profile, the AXE features a full, extended duckbill shape with a significant bow – great for clearing the infield and power-hitting your way to victory. A traditional rounded toe combines with minimal concaving for a smooth, lightweight pickup.Stickers-wise, the AXE is in keeping with the rest of the Newbery range, which means classically styled branding in the bat’s blue and red colour scheme – until you get to the toe, where an emphatic “X” adorns the rear for a standout look. While we understand how difficult it can be to select a bat online, we work closely with our partner brands to provide the best bat for you at each grade and price point. That way you can be assured that you will receive the best possible bat available. However, we are unfortunately unable to weigh individual bats, or to guarantee a specific number of grains per bat.

Newbery

A legendary name in English cricket, Newbery have a reputation for quality that few can match.
It’s well deserved, too: their batmaking lineage goes back over a century and encompasses some of the most skilled makers in the history of the craft.

The story begins with Len Newbery, a master batmaker who was among the pioneers of cricket bat crafting techniques in the early 1900s. Len passed his skills on to his son, John, who quickly demonstrated his own prowess and became a respected figure within the industry.

In 1981, John struck out on his own and founded John Newbery Ltd, taking charge as master batmaker. It didn’t take long for his craftsmanship and eye for detail to pay dividends – he produced blades of such quality that players from around the world demanded Newbery bats.

John set the standard, and his team followed. To this day, long after his passing, every batmaker at the workshop knows the rule: only bats that would be good enough for John are good enough to bear the Newbery name.

Perfectly crafted with premium branding, there’s nothing classier than a Newbery bat. When you walk out to the crease with one in your hand, you feel that prestige, and with it comes a desire to perform at your best. Every innings is a chance to show what true quality looks like. That’s Newbery.

Grade 2

High-quality willow that often performs as well as Grade One but isn’t quite as cosmetically clean. Grade Two bats usually feature at least six visible grains on the face with perhaps the odd knot or blemish. Compared to Grade One, they may feature a larger amount of red wood towards the edge of the blade. The best “butterfly” blades, which use willow with a naturally occurring butterfly-shaped stain, are also typically classified as Grade Two.

Please note that these are typical characteristics. While we work closely with our partner brands to provide the best bats for you, we are unable to guarantee a specific number of grains or the overall appearance of the willow on individual bats.
