Cricket bat weights are all about a player’s preference, there is no right and wrong here you just need to decide what is best for you. At Pro:Direct we list our cricket bats in the following weight ranges for adult cricket bats. Light, Medium and Heavy - but what do they actually mean? Let us explain below.

  • Light – up to 2lb 9oz in weight: A lighter bat allows for players to have more control over their shot making an in theory make is easier to manoeuvre the bat. They are generally for players who like to time the ball but you will still have no issues finding the boundary, but this is our most popular bat weight.

  • Medium – weights between 2lb 10oz and 2lb 12oz: Medium weight bats are for players who like to add a bit more power to their game but have the strength to control their bat swing.

  • Heavy – 2lb 12oz and heavier: It’s very rare that players will request a bat that is this heavy, you need to be confident that you can time your swing to make contact cleanly with the ball coming towards you. Because of the weight of the bat, it will be harder to control but if you make contact you can almost guarantee it will be sailing towards the boundary.

  • Pick Up and Balance

Lots of brands use these terms to describe their cricket bat profiles but what does the “pick up” of the bat actually mean?

A good pick up generally means that the bat feels balanced in your hands when you lift it up in your stance. It doesn’t feel too heavy, and it doesn’t feel too light. This of course comes down to each individual person’s preference, one person may think a bat is well balanced and another may disagree. It’s all about what is right for you and what feels comfortable.

For example a heavier cricket bat may feel far lighter than its weight because of the balance and how the profile of the bat affect the pickup. Bats with higher middles or sweet spots generally pick up better than bats with lower middles due to where the main bulk of the wood in the blade is positioned.

Lots of brands are now introducing shorter blade bats with slightly longer handles to help balance them without having to sacrifice the size of the bat itself. It allows them to leave more wood in the blade.

    Maximum Cricket Bat Size

In 2017 the MCC who govern the game introduced a new law based on the maximum size a cricket bat can be. After consultations with bat manufacturers, the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations, International Cricket Council, MCC World Cricket committee, umpires’ associations and other global governing bodies on the balance between bat and ball.

All manufacturers now adhere to these rules so all the cricket bats we stock will comply with the below stipulation.

    Maximum Width – 108mm
    Maximum Depth – 67mm
    Maximum Edge – 40mm
