The adidas Adizero Adios Pro has become one of the key race shoes in the adidas running line-up, built for faster road running from 10K through to the marathon. The adidas Adizero Adios Pro 5 marks a bigger change than the familiar silhouette first suggests. EnergyRods, a defining part of the Adios Pro since the original, have gone. In their place are EnergyRims, moving the carbon-fibre stiffening structure towards the outside of the platform and leaving more uninterrupted Lightstrike Pro directly beneath the foot. The idea first appeared at the extreme end of adidas racing in the Pro Evo family before making its way into the main Adios Pro line.

Lightstrike Pro has also been retuned for generation five, with a slightly firmer setup aimed at adding spring and stability. The men's Adios Pro 5 weighs an average 177g in a UK 8.5, 23g lighter than the Pro 4 and a 12% weight saving. adidas also claims the combined changes to the foam and carbon structure deliver a 9% uplift in energy return.

Up top, Lightlock 2.0 uses less material than before, while the outsole keeps the lightweight LIGHTTRAXION layout with Continental rubber concentrated around the toe and toe-off area. Our first on-foot impression also found the Pro 5 slightly more accommodating through the forefoot than the Pro 4, although fit will still depend on foot shape.

The Adios Pro remains adidas' main long-distance road racing shoe. It sits above faster training options such as the EVO SL and below the much more extreme Pro Evo in terms of outright race-day specialisation, making it the obvious Adizero starting point for runners targeting PBs over half marathon and marathon distance.
