The History of the Nike Alphafly
The History of the Nike Alphafly
The Nike Alphafly is one of the most influential running shoes ever created. Since its debut, it has transformed elite distance running, sparked debates about technology in sport, and helped athletes achieve some of the fastest marathon performances in history.
Its origins can be traced to Nike's ambitious quest to break one of athletics' most enduring barriers: the two-hour marathon.

Origins: The Road to Breaking Two Hours
The story of the Alphafly begins with Nike's "Breaking2" project. Launched in the mid-2010s, the initiative aimed to help a runner complete a marathon in under two hours. Nike engineers worked closely with elite athletes, particularly Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, to develop footwear that maximized running efficiency. Earlier innovations produced the Vaporfly series, featuring ZoomX foam and a carbon-fiber plate designed to improve energy return.

Although Kipchoge narrowly missed the barrier during Nike's first Breaking2 attempt in 2017, the lessons learned laid the groundwork for a more advanced racing shoe. Nike continued refining its technology, eventually developing a prototype that would become the Alphafly.
The Historic Breakthrough
On October 12, 2019, Eliud Kipchoge made history in Vienna by running 1:59:40 in the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, becoming the first person to cover the marathon distance in under two hours. While the event's conditions meant the run was not recognized as an official world record, the achievement was a landmark moment in sporting history. Kipchoge wore a prototype version of the Nike Alphafly NEXT%, bringing the shoe into the global spotlight.
The prototype featured a combination of ZoomX foam, a full-length carbon-fiber plate, and visible Air Zoom pods in the forefoot. Together, these elements created a highly cushioned and responsive platform that improved running economy while maintaining propulsion at marathon pace.
Commercial Launch and Early Controversy
Nike officially released the Alphafly NEXT% in 2020. The shoe quickly became a dominant force in elite road racing, helping athletes set records and win major marathons. Its innovative design represented a new generation of "super shoes" that combined lightweight materials, highly resilient foam, and carbon-plate technology.

The shoe's success also sparked controversy. Critics argued that the technology provided an unfair advantage, while supporters viewed it as a natural progression of sporting innovation. In response to the rapid evolution of racing footwear, World Athletics introduced regulations governing stack height and shoe construction. The commercial Alphafly was designed to comply with these rules while retaining its performance benefits.
Alphafly 2: Refinement and Comfort
In 2022, Nike introduced the Alphafly 2. Rather than completely redesigning the shoe, Nike focused on refinement. The updated model featured improvements to the upper construction and fit, while maintaining the hallmark combination of Air Zoom units, ZoomX foam, and a carbon-fiber Flyplate. The goal was to make the shoe more stable and comfortable for a wider range of marathon runners without sacrificing speed.

The Alphafly 2 continued the line's success, remaining a popular choice among elite athletes and serious amateurs aiming for personal bests.
Alphafly 3: A New Chapter
Nike unveiled the Alphafly 3 in late 2023, describing it as the lightest and most tested Alphafly ever produced. While the core technology remained the same, Nike refined the formula with a smoother heel-to-toe transition, a wider carbon-fiber Flyplate, an updated outsole, and a redesigned Atomknit upper.

The shoe quickly demonstrated its pedigree. During development, Nike athlete Kelvin Kiptum wore an early version while setting what was then a marathon world record of 2:00:35 at the Chicago Marathon. Other Nike-sponsored athletes also achieved major victories and historic performances while testing the new model.
Nike Alphafly Legacy and Impact
The Nike Alphafly's influence extends far beyond Nike itself. It helped establish the modern super-shoe era, prompting nearly every major running brand to develop carbon-plated racing shoes. The technology has reshaped marathon racing, accelerated performance standards, and sparked ongoing conversations about the balance between athletic talent and innovation.

Today, the Alphafly is widely regarded as one of the most significant innovations in distance-running footwear. From its roots in the Breaking2 project to its role in world-record performances, the shoe represents a milestone in the evolution of endurance sport.
