The Clifton 11
With deep cushioning, a lightweight build and a smooth ride thanks to the MetaRocker design, an upturn of the outsole from the forefoot to the toes, the Clifton has been at the centre of HOKA’s road running range for 11 years.
Designed for daily runs, the Clifton 11 delivers comfort with a comparatively effortless stride, helped by its lightweight feel and smooth transition.
As you can see from the table above, it features the same high stack of foam as the Clifton Pro, with the same 8mm heel drop. They also both feature engineered mesh uppers with targeted breathability and hold, plus Durabrasion rubber in the outsole.
A new podular design to the outsole is also shared. By breaking the outsole into small pods, HOKA helps add flexibility, reduce weight and give the shoe a more natural stride through daily miles.
The Clifton Pro
The major change in the Pro is what HOKA are calling ProGlide+.
Unlike some other brands, HOKA do not always name their foams in the same way, but they have started introducing names to describe the ride the shoe gives. ProGlide+ refers to the combination of supercritical EVA foam and a more aggressive MetaRocker that you find underfoot in the Pro.
The outcome is a softer feel than the Clifton 11, with a forward dynamic that delivers a touch of extra pace. It still sits in the realms of daily trainer, but the Pro is livelier and more energetic.
The other major change is in the aesthetics. With larger HOKA branding on the side, a bolder shape and stronger colour choices, HOKA have separated the more traditional style of the Clifton 11 from the more modern look of the Pro. It feels more suited to wearing beyond your runs, without losing the daily training purpose underneath.
Which HOKA Clifton should you choose?
The Clifton 11 delivers the ride it has always been known for, only enhanced. Expect smooth miles, long-distance comfort and a lightweight, rolling feel that eases you through your run.
The Clifton Pro is a touch more aggressive, adding in a softer ride, a faster transition from landing to toe-off and a little extra bounce when you want to pick up the pace.
If you want the classic Clifton feel, go Clifton 11. If you want the Clifton family with more softness, more movement and a bit more energy, go Clifton Pro.
Which of these rides suits you best is up to you, but both are built for finding your own rhythm and peace on your daily training miles.
