First Look: Altra Vanish Carbon 3

First Look: Altra Vanish Carbon 3

Spend too much time looking at modern race shoes and the recipe becomes familiar. Get close to 40mm of foam underfoot, make it PEBA, put carbon through the middle, curve the whole thing forwards and strip everything off the upper that does not need to be there.

The new Altra Vanish Carbon 3 ticks most of those boxes. The interesting part is where it refuses to follow the template.

There is 40mm at the heel, 36mm at the forefoot, a two-piece FAST RCE full-PEBA midsole and an aggressive rocker. The carbon plate splits beneath the big toe. The fit is Altra's Slim FootShape rather than the pointed forefoot you get on plenty of race shoes. And after two generations of zero-drop Vanish Carbon, this one moves to 4mm.

We have it in rotation now and are putting miles into it, so this is still very much a First Look. No race-day verdict yet. For now, we have been doing what any running-shoe obsessive does when something interesting lands: turning it over, flexing it, staring at the plate cut-outs and working out why Altra has built it this way.

What Is the Vanish Carbon 3 For?

This is the race shoe in the Altra range.

Escalante can keep things flexible and relatively simple, Torin can soak up daily mileage and Olympus can disappear off into the hills. Vanish Carbon 3 is built for the days when pace matters: quicker sessions, half marathons, marathons and chasing a PB.

If you have read our Altra Running Shoes Explained guide, you will know how varied the range has become. The Carbon 3 pushes that point further than anything else. Altra has gone from being almost synonymous with flat, foot-shaped running shoes to building a proper 40mm PEBA racer.

The move from 0mm to 4mm is a big part of that. Vanish Carbon 2 sat level from heel to forefoot. Carbon 3 introduces an offset and a much stronger rocker, giving the shoe more shape to work with as you roll towards toe-off.

Four millimetres is still low by race-shoe standards, but this is no longer a flat-looking Altra with carbon added. The whole platform has been designed around running quickly.

Full PEBA, Carbon and a Very Different Plate

FAST RCE is the new foam doing most of the work. It is a two-piece, supercritical full-PEBA setup with the carbon plate sitting between the layers.

PEBA is hardly exotic in 2026. Most serious marathon racers are using some version of it because you can build a lot of cushioning without turning the shoe into a brick. What interests us more is what Altra has done around it.

The stack is high, the rocker is obvious and the plate is anything but generic.

Most carbon race shoes use a plate to stiffen the forefoot into one fairly rigid lever. Vanish Carbon 3 splits that structure beneath the big toe. Altra still gets the carbon stiffness it wants through the shoe, but the big-toe section is able to work more independently rather than being tied completely into the rest of the forefoot.

If you have read our piece on What Makes Altra Different?, that probably sounds very Altra. This is a brand that has spent years talking about toe space, foot shape and what happens at the front of a running shoe. Instead of abandoning that thinking to make a supershoe, it has found a way of building the carbon around it.

We are particularly curious about whether you can actually feel the split when the pace comes up. Race-shoe tech can look brilliant in an exploded diagram and disappear completely once you start running. The proper test will be whether the Vanish feels different through push-off when the reps get quicker and the legs get tired.

A Race Fit, Rather Than a Roomy Altra

The fit deserves some attention too, because "Altra" can immediately make people think "wide".

Vanish Carbon 3 uses the brand's Slim FootShape. The heel and midfoot are built to sit close and secure, while the front retains more room for the toes than the sharply tapered shape seen on a lot of carbon racers.

That is an important distinction. FootShape does not mean Altra has simply made the whole shoe wider. The extra freedom is concentrated further forwards, while the middle of the shoe still needs to stay locked down when you are moving quickly.

The upper is appropriately race-day. Lightweight engineered mesh, a thin tongue and very little excess material. A wider eyestay helps secure the midfoot without cinching the front of the shoe down too aggressively.

On paper, it sounds like a useful compromise for runners who enjoy a close race fit but hate having their toes squeezed together after 20 miles. Whether it remains properly secure when cornering hard and running at race pace is something we are watching closely.

What We're Testing

At £229.99 the Vanish Carbon 3 is going straight into a very serious part of the running-shoe market. Full PEBA, carbon and a near-40mm stack are no longer enough on their own. Plenty of excellent racers already have those.

The bits that make this one worth watching are more specific: the move to 4mm, the split carbon plate, the aggressive rocker and a race fit that still looks recognisably Altra.

We are running in it now and want proper miles before calling anything. The big questions are how FAST RCE feels once you get up to marathon and half-marathon pace, whether the rocker comes alive when you lean on it, how much you notice the split plate through toe-off and whether that Slim FootShape stays locked in over longer efforts.

Then we can talk about whether Altra has built an interesting supershoe or a genuinely great one.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What makes the Altra Vanish Carbon 3 different from other Altra shoes?

The Vanish Carbon 3 is Altra's dedicated race shoe, featuring a substantial 40mm stack height with PEBA foam and a carbon plate. It also introduces a 4mm drop, moving away from Altra's traditional zero-drop design, and incorporates a unique split carbon plate under the big toe.

What is the primary purpose of the Altra Vanish Carbon 3?

This shoe is designed for speed and racing. It's intended for quicker training sessions, half marathons, marathons, and any situation where achieving a personal best is the goal. It represents Altra's evolution into building high-performance supershoes.

How does the carbon plate in the Vanish Carbon 3 differ from typical carbon race shoes?

Unlike many carbon race shoes that use a single, rigid plate to stiffen the forefoot, the Vanish Carbon 3 splits its carbon plate structure beneath the big toe. This allows the big-toe section to move more independently while still providing the desired carbon stiffness throughout the shoe.

What is unique about the fit of the Altra Vanish Carbon 3?

The Vanish Carbon 3 uses Altra's Slim FootShape, which offers more room in the toe box than many aggressively tapered carbon racers. However, the heel and midfoot are designed to be secure, aiming for a compromise between a race-ready close fit and Altra's signature foot-shaped design.

What key features are being tested in the Altra Vanish Carbon 3?

The focus of testing is on how the new FAST RCE PEBA foam performs at marathon and half-marathon paces, whether the aggressive rocker enhances performance when pushed, the sensation of the split carbon plate during toe-off, and how securely the Slim FootShape fit remains during long runs and fast cornering.
