2002: Nike Mercurial Vapor I

The Mercurial Vapor I is where the silo becomes the thing most people now recognise. Low, sharp, minimal and properly built around speed. Nike introduced a one-piece NikeSKIN upper and engineered the boot down to 190g. For 2002, that was a serious statement.

NikeSKIN still feels like a proper Mercurial name because it captured the whole direction of the boot. The Vapor was not chasing padded comfort. It was chasing closeness. A one-piece upper meant fewer interruptions, less bulk and a cleaner feel around the foot. The finished boot looked like Nike had stripped away anything that did not help a player move quickly.

2006: Nike Mercurial Vapor III

The Vapor III is still one of the best-looking Mercurials ever made, but the reason it stays in the memory goes deeper than the colourways. Nike built it around a microfibre upper engineered to conform to the shape of the foot, with a carbon insert added for stability. Proper mid-2000s Mercurial: lightweight obsession meeting a more grown-up understanding of support.

This is where Vapor starts to feel complete. The first Vapor had the shock. The second refined the concept. The third felt like Nike knew exactly what it was doing. The upper had more shape, the heel looked cleaner, the boot still had that thin Mercurial feel, but there was more structure behind it. The carbon insert gave the boot a stronger performance spine without turning it into something heavy or overbuilt.

Then there is the imagery. R9 at the 2006 World Cup. Henry in white and gold. Cristiano rising. The Vapor III sits in that sweet spot where the boot is still simple enough to feel pure, but advanced enough to feel elite. No collar, no visible cables, no wild plate story. 2008: Nike Mercurial Vapor SL

The Vapor SL is one of the purest boot-nerd moments in Mercurial history. It started as an experiment to see how light a boot could get and was made almost entirely from carbon fibre. Rare, expensive, slightly ridiculous in the best way. The sort of boot that feels like it should be behind glass, which is probably where most pairs now belong.

Nike was treating Mercurial like a concept project. Carbon fibre was not just there for the spec sheet. It gave the boot a different energy. Stiffer, sharper, more mechanical. The SL felt like Nike asking what would happen if normal commercial caution moved to the side for a minute. How far can you take a speed boot? How little material can you use? How much of that racing-world feeling can be pulled into football?

You can feel the Vapor SL in what followed. The first Superfly borrowed from the same world: carbon, weight, response, the idea of a halo Mercurial sitting above the standard Vapor line. Even if most players never wore the SL, it gave the silo a laboratory feel before Superfly made that role official.

Rare boots can be easy to romanticise, but the SL earns it. Not because it was the most practical Mercurial. Because it was one of the clearest examples of Nike pushing the silo past normal limits.

2008: Nike Mercurial Vapor IV

The Vapor IV took some of that concept thinking and gave the mainline boot a more futuristic silhouette. The lace cover is the obvious detail. A streamlined cover across the laces gave the upper a cleaner look, and visually it changed how the Vapor sat on pitch. The Swoosh moved forward, the lines got sleeker, and the boot looked less like football tradition and more like a piece of speed equipment.

This era pushed Mercurial further into motion-led design. The boot had to work, but it also had to read from the stands. Bright colourways, clean surfaces, aggressive shapes. The Vapor IV was not subtle because Mercurial had no reason to be subtle. Nike had a boot line built around the fastest players in the game. It needed to look alive before kick-off.

The lace cover itself is such a classic design debate. It cleaned the contact area and made the boot look quicker, but footballers are fussy about laces for a reason. Some want adjustability, some want that uninterrupted strike zone, some just want the boot to look mad. The Vapor IV sat firmly in the "make it look fast and feel streamlined" camp.

It was not as loved as the Vapor III by everyone, but it pushed the silhouette forward. Mercurial has always needed those boots too.

2009: Nike Mercurial Superfly I

The first Mercurial Superfly changed the hierarchy of the silo. Vapor had been the face of Mercurial speed, but Superfly arrived as the upgrade. The fastest boot going picked up the pace, came in at 185g, and introduced Nike Flywire technology through a visible, super-thin wire harness in the upper.

Visible Flywire gave the boot a new face. You were not just told the boot was advanced. You could see the support system running through it. Superfly looked more engineered than Vapor, more expensive, more dramatic, more like something Nike had been building in private before deciding to let the public in.

Flywire's job was to lock the foot down without building a thicker upper. Very Superfly. It was not trying to make speed feel soft or simple. It was trying to make speed feel held together by something new. Less material, more structure. A boot that looked assembled from performance ideas rather than cut from a normal template.

Cristiano was the perfect player for it. United-era Cristiano had the whole package for that boot: acceleration, arrogance, stop-start movement, free-kick stance, stepovers, the sense that every touch was part football and part theatre. The orange and silver launch colourway still feels like the first true Superfly image. Loud but technical. Flashy but backed by real design.

This is Superfly at its best. Not simply "the collared one", because that came later. Superfly was the place Nike could push Mercurial harder than Vapor. The experiment had a name.

Vapor vs Superfly: why the split matters

Vapor and Superfly work best when they feel like different answers to the same question. Vapor is the cleaner one: low-cut, direct, stripped back, the version for players who want Mercurial without extra theatre. Superfly should be the lab: the bolder idea, the boot where Nike tries the thing that might shape the next five years.

That split made the line stronger. It gave Mercurial range without losing identity. When the two boots became too similar after 360, the choice became easier but less interesting. Collar or no collar is useful. Vapor or Superfly as two different versions of speed is much better.

2010: Nike Mercurial Superfly II

The Superfly II is one of the most interesting Mercurials because it shows Nike trying to make speed more intelligent. Flywire stayed, but Nike added a new design and construction in the traction plate: NikeSENSE. The idea was an adaptive stud system that could move under pressure and react to the surface.

Whether you loved it or doubted it, the thinking was pure Mercurial. Speed starts through the first push. The moment a player loads the forefoot and tries to leave a defender behind is tiny, but it is where the boot either helps or gets in the way. NikeSENSE tried to engineer that moment. Not just lighter boot, not just thinner upper, but traction with a brain.

Tech like this always divides people, which is probably why I like this chapter. Football boot history is better when brands try something that gives people an argument. NikeSENSE sounded wild, looked serious and made the Superfly II feel like a proper continuation of the lab idea. It was not just a new colour and a slightly tweaked upper. Nike had gone after the bottom of the boot and tried to make it do something different.

The Superfly II era also gave us one of the great Mercurial culture moments: CR7 Safari. It turned a performance boot into a signature object. Loud, personal, divisive and unmistakably Cristiano. Nike was no longer only building boots for him. It was building Mercurial stories around him.

Mercurial has always worked best as tech plus player plus image. Superfly II understood all three.

2011: Nike Mercurial Superfly III

The Superfly III was not a full reset. Nike adjusted the Superfly II formula rather than abandoning it. Flywire placement changed, the upper was refined, and the graphical treatment gave the boot a stronger visual identity. A tune-up, but not an empty one. After the huge leap of the first Superfly and the NikeSENSE story on the second, Nike chose to polish rather than start again.

That decision says plenty about where the silo was. Superfly had become its own character by then: technical, expensive, bold, sometimes debated, always visible. The III kept that personality. It did not chase the adidas F50 adiZero by trying to be the lightest thing on the pitch at any cost. It stayed in its own lane, built around structure, traction and the kind of tech story Nike wanted to own.

This was also peak speed-boot rivalry. Cristiano in Mercurial. Messi in F50. Nike with Superfly. adidas with adiZero. The boots were not just products; they were part of the player debate. You could feel it in boot forums, in changing rooms, in the way kids chose sides without even thinking too much about the actual tech. Superfly III was caught in that noise, and that gives it more character than its list of changes.

Not every great boot chapter needs a revolution. Some hold the line while the market tries to pull the story somewhere else.

2012: Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII

After the Superfly years, the Vapor VIII felt like Nike clearing its throat. The boot returned the Mercurial story to a cleaner, lower, more direct speed shape. The upper was improved with a synthetic fabric that had a suede-like finish to enhance ball feel, and the heel stud pattern was adjusted to two. Even before you get to the colourway, this was Vapor trying to reclaim its own identity.

The Mango launch pair helped massively. Some colourways become part of the tech story because they make the boot easier to remember. Mango did that. Bright, sharp and confident without feeling like a gimmick. A proper Mercurial colour, the kind that looks even better in old match photos than it did in the box.

The suede-like finish shows where Nike's thinking had moved. After years of talking about weight, carbon and traction, the Vapor VIII gave more attention back to ball feel. Not leather-soft, because that was never the Vapor brief, but a touch surface with more feedback and a little more grip at speed. Mercurial was learning that fast players still need feel. The best speed boot cannot disappear on foot completely; it has to give enough contact to trust the ball when everything is moving quickly.

Vapor VIII was not trying to be the most complicated Mercurial. That is why it worked. It brought the line back to a cleaner rhythm.

Mango made the Vapor VIII instantly recognisable, but the cleaner upper story gave the boot its substance.

2013: Nike Mercurial Vapor IX

The Vapor IX added a dimpled pattern to improve control and eventually landed in 22 colourways, including rare CR7 editions. Texture plus output. Nike was refining the boot and feeding the culture around it at the same time.

The dimpled upper gave the Vapor IX a clear point of difference from the VIII. It looked technical without needing a huge structural change, and it fitted the idea of control at speed. Again, not control in the Tiempo sense. More about keeping the ball close enough when a player is moving quickly, striking through the ball cleanly, or taking small touches before opening up.

The colourway run is a big part of why the IX is remembered. By this point, Mercurial had become one of Nike Football's strongest visual platforms. CR7 editions, rare drops, bold graphics, boots that could own a pitch in two seconds of TV footage. The boot was not only evolving through materials. It was evolving through release culture.

The product and the story around it started feeding each other. The boot gave Cristiano a canvas. Cristiano gave the boot more meaning. Nike gave collectors and players a reason to keep watching.

2014: Nike Mercurial Superfly IV

The Superfly IV is one of the biggest moments in Mercurial history because it changed the outline of a football boot. Nike Flyknit arrived, a strong lightweight yarn woven into a one-piece supportive upper, and the Dynamic Fit collar gave the boot a completely different look. Even people who did not care about boot tech noticed.

The collar got the headlines, but Flyknit was the real story. It allowed Nike to build the upper differently, with structure and stretch coming from the knit rather than layers of synthetic material. Superfly gained a new kind of speed language. The boot looked wrapped rather than constructed. Less traditional shell, more fitted piece of kit.

Brio cables worked with the Flyknit to create lockdown through the upper, and that combination made the Superfly IV feel like more than a visual trick. It had a genuine new idea behind it. Nike took the Superfly lab role and pushed it into a totally new silhouette. After the early carbon and Flywire era, this was the next big Superfly statement.

The Volt and Blue Lagoon colourway around the 2015 Women's World Cup deserves a mention too. Mercurial is often told through Ronaldo and Cristiano, but the line has wider football memory than that. A boot with this much history should not have all its best moments sitting in the same player's locker.

The Superfly IV is the kind of boot that makes every archive wall look better. It marks a before and after.

2015 to 2016: Nike Mercurial Vapor X, Vapor XI and Superfly V

After the Superfly IV shock, the Vapor line had to keep the low-cut Mercurial argument alive. Vapor X carried the modern Mercurial shape without the collar, giving players a cleaner route into the same speed story. It was still sharp, still streamlined, still very Vapor, but now existing in a world where Superfly had become the visual headline.

Vapor XI kept that role moving in 2016. Low-cut, light, modern, built for players who liked Mercurial without anything around the ankle. That split has always been important to the silo. Vapor gives you the purer look. Superfly gives you the bigger statement.

Superfly V continued the Flyknit era with knitted Speedribs on the side for extra support. Smaller than the Superfly IV shift, but part of the same development. Nike had made the speed boot look new. Now it had to make the knitted idea sharper.

This era also sits inside Cristiano's long Mercurial chapter. By 2016, CR7 and Mercurial were completely locked together. Signature storytelling, Champions League nights, Portugal, Madrid, the whole machine. Superfly was no longer just a boot he wore. It was part of his image.

2017: Nike Mercurial Vapor Flyknit Ultra

The Mercurial Vapor Flyknit Ultra is one of those boots that makes boot nerds lean forward. A low-cut Flyknit version of the Vapor XI, with a NikeSkin coating that was softer and more comfortable at the top, then stronger closer to the traction plate. Exactly the sort of detail that makes a Mercurial feel special.

The Ultra was not a mainstream Mercurial in the way the Vapor VIII or Superfly IV were. It felt more like Nike showing what it had been working on behind the curtain. Low-cut Flyknit, coated yarns, structure changing through the upper, a build that took the softness of knit and tried to make it speed-boot sharp.

This is where the Vapor line gets interesting again. Superfly had owned Flyknit visually because of the collar, but the Ultra suggested another route: a knitted Vapor without the ankle drama. Pure low-cut speed with experimental material thinking. Limited, slightly strange and exactly the kind of boot people regret not buying.

The "What The" Superfly IV SE sits around this period too, adding to the feeling of Nike treating Mercurial like an archive as much as a current product. By 2017, the line had enough past to start remixing itself.

And when you think of the Flyknit Ultra, you think of one player. Eden Hazard.

The Flyknit Ultra felt like a prototype with studs, and Hazard was the perfect player to carry it.

2018: Nike Mercurial Vapor 12 and Superfly 6 360

The 2018 Mercurial 360 generation wrapped the whole foot and brought Vapor and Superfly closer than ever. The Vapor 12 and Superfly 6 shared the same full Flyknit direction, with the collar becoming the main split between the two.

For Vapor, the 360 era was brilliant. It finally gave the low-cut Mercurial the full knitted wrap without asking players to buy into the collar. Vapor had always been the purist's choice. The 360 Vapor felt modern while keeping that lower profile. It gave the silo a cleaner bridge between the Superfly future and the Vapor past.

For Superfly, the story became less straightforward. The boot was still strong, but the old idea of Superfly as Nike's wildest Mercurial started to fade. When Vapor and Superfly share almost everything, Superfly becomes more of a cut than a concept. Fine for some players, less interesting for anyone who remembers what the first Superfly represented.

The Kim Jones collaboration within the Superfly 360 world also showed how Mercurial had moved beyond straight performance launches. London, sneakers, fashion, football, all crossing through one boot. Mercurial has always looked good when it steps outside the standard boot lane.

The 360 generation is one of the most important modern Mercurials because it did two things at once. It pushed construction forward and blurred the Vapor/Superfly difference in a way Nike has been living with ever since.

2019 to 2021: Nike Mercurial Vapor 13, Vapor 14, Superfly 7 and Superfly 8

The Vapor 13 and Superfly 7 pushed the 360 language forward. High-tenacity yarns, a more refined upper feel, a Superfly collar that sat lower than the early Flyknit years, and a line that now felt smoother than shocking. The boot had moved past the moment where knit alone could surprise people. Nike had to make it feel better, cleaner, more stable, more natural.

Mbappé became the obvious modern Mercurial face in this period: direct, explosive, World Cup-coded, the closest modern heir to the idea that the fastest player on the pitch should be in Mercurial. Vini Jr would later add a different kind of energy: looser, more chaotic, more winger-street than pure straight-line speed.

Then came the Vapor 14 and Superfly 8 in 2021, the Dragonfly era. Vaporposite brought a different upper story, moving away from the idea that knit had to do everything. The design language helped too. Transparent, technical, sectioned, almost like Nike wanted you to see how the boot was built before you even read the product copy.

This period was not about one huge leap. It was about Mercurial becoming a full storytelling platform. Player editions, archive references, special drops and visual systems all started sitting around the mainline boots. The Ada Hegerberg edition, the Mbappé releases, the broader CR7 legacy, the sense that every colourway could carry its own little chapter. Nike could put Mercurial into different football worlds and it still made sense.

Tech keeps the boot alive. Story gives it pull.

2022: Nike Mercurial Vapor 15 and Superfly 9

The 2022 Mercurial generation brought the biggest modern tech change. Vapor 15 and Superfly 9 introduced the Air Zoom era properly, with SpeedCage, Vaporposite+ and a Zoom Air unit sitting in the traction plate. After years of Mercurial speed being told through uppers, collars, knit and shape, Nike moved the main sensation underfoot.

Zoom Air gave the Mercurial a different type of speed feeling. Not simply lighter, not simply thinner, but more responsive. A speed boot with compressed Air inside the plate gave Nike a new answer to the same old question: how can the boot help fast feel faster?

SpeedCage and Vaporposite+ carried the rest of the package. You cannot add response underfoot and then let the upper feel vague. The whole boot has to keep the foot connected to that platform. This generation felt like a proper chapter because the tech changed the sensation of the boot, not only the look of it.

It also suited the Mbappé era. His speed is not old-school winger speed. It is repeated acceleration, straight-line threat, sudden separation, the feeling that one touch can turn a defensive line into panic. Zoom Air gave Nike a modern tech story for that kind of player.
