How to Choose a Junior Cricket Helmet Under the New ECB Guidance
If you are buying a kids cricket helmet, there is one key change to know. To improve safety standards within the game the English Cricket Board (ECB) now expects junior players to wear helmets that meet a certain manufacturing criteria known as BS7928:2013.
This standard ensures helmets have been tested for the smaller junior cricket ball - ensuring their safety even when facing the fastest Yorkers.
ECB‑approved junior cricket helmets
A simple way to narrow your options is to focus on helmets already approved for junior cricket. According to the current ECB list, this includes the Gray‑Nicolls Atomic 360, the Masuri Vision Series Elite, Test, and Club models, plus all C&D junior helmets.
This gives parents a solid starting point. Masuri, in particular, is widely used in professional cricket, and its junior helmets are fully certified for the lighter 4¾ oz junior ball used in hard‑ball junior cricket.
If your child already owns a suitable helmet, you might also consider adding a neck protector or stem guard. These attach to the back of certain helmets and offer extra protection without replacing the entire helmet.
In short: if your child plays junior hard‑ball cricket, make sure their helmet is tested for the junior ball, meets the BS7928:2013 standard, and fits properly. That’s the key change parents need to be aware of.
