Back in 1984, an ambitious young American by the name of Michael Jordan promised to revolutionise basketball, and Nike took notice, looking to create a footwear revolution of their own. The resulting Air Jordan 1 was the start of a brand that would storm the basketball and streetwear world, appreciated and sought-after everywhere.

Now an established leader in footwear on and off the court, Jordan’s iconic “Jumpman” logo is proudly displayed on a huge selection of slick streetwear pieces, most notably their signature range of Air Jordan sneakers. In ’88, Nike moved some of their best off-court talent to the Jordan roster, onboarding the up-and-coming designer Tinker Hatfield to create the third generation of the Air Jordan. Best known at the time for the comfy Air Max, Tinker would add a heel Air Unit and the now-iconic “Nike Air” heel tab detail as part of a unique tumbled leather and elephant-skin design that Michael himself especially liked. Always one to leave his mark, Tinker also gave visible Air cushioning its Jordan debut here.

What MJ liked most of all, though, was the embroidered Jumpman logo on the tongue, inspired by an ’85 photo shoot and appearing for the first time in this form on the Air Jordan 3. Building on the shoe’s fresh look and cementing its release as a cultural moment, the AJ3 saw Nike run a spectacularly successful commercial campaign starring Spike Lee as “Mars Blackmon” from “She’s Gotta Have It”.
